In a building on a back-alley on Seventh Street in Ginza, there is a small Inari shrine. This shrine is called Toyoiwa Inari shrine. The person who made this shrine was Sakubei Yasuda, a warlord who was active during the Warring States period in late 16th century. Sakubei Yasuda was known nationwide as a fierce warlord. He served under a great commander named Mitsuhide Akechi. Mitsuhide served under Nobunaga Oda, a feudal lord who almost conquered all of Japan. Mitsuhide acted as the right-hand man for Nobunaga. However, Mitsuhide was not only a powerful or smart warlord. He was also a very kind warlord. When he was young, he did not have a master to serve and lived in poverty. At the time, his wife, Hiroko, sold her black hair to support him. Grateful to her for her sacrifice, he did not have a concubine and never had a woman other than Hiroko his entire life. Back then, it was natural to have a concubine, but he only ever loved Hiroko. Also, when a soldier under him got injured in a battle, he would send out letters expressing concern for the injury. A warlord so mindful of his subordinates was rare. Sakubei Yasuda was proud to serve such a man as Mitsuhide. He began to think of how wonderful it would be if a man like Mitsuhide ruled the world. In 1582, Mitsuhide departed for Bitchu (now Okayama prefecture). He was going to a war with the Mori family, a major force in the Chugoku region. However, Mitsuhide marched toward Kyoto instead of the Chugoku region. At the time, his master Nobunaga Oda was staying in Honnoji in Kyoto. Mitsuhide rebelled against Nobunaga and killed him. This is called the Honnoji Incident. Sakubei Yasuda was the first to march into Honnoji and fought Nobunaga. Sakubei was injured in this fight. Sakubei must have believed that Mitsuhide would finally rule Japan. After fighting and fighting again for Mitsuhide, he was seriously injured. Due to the injury suffered in the Honnoji Incident, he could not fight for a while. During this period, Mitsuhide lost the battle against Hideyoshi Toyotomi (the Battle of Yamazaki), who was seeking revenge for Nobunaga, and died. Sakubei could not participate in Mitsuhide’s final battle. Unable to participate in the Battle of Yamazaki, Sakubei survived. It was he who built the Toyoiwa Inari shrine. What was his wish that was placed upon this shrine?
