When Ieyasu Tokugawa won the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, Japan’s politics started to settle with the Tokugawa clan at its center. There were almost no samurais that would challenge the Tokugawa clan, and wars became rare. With no wars, those who made a living from wars lost their jobs. Among those who lost their jobs were many ninjas. Ninjas acted as spies during wars. However, ninjas are not needed if there are no wars. So, the unemployed ninjas gathered to Edo and got by doing odd jobs. There was a man in Edo who kept the group of ninjas together. His name was Jinnai Kosaka. Jinnai Kosaka used to be a samurai, and it was said that he was either the son or grandson of Masanobu Kosaka, a warlord who served the Takeda family. The Takeda family was a feudal lord family that defeated Ieyasu Tokugawa, the founder of the Tokugawa regime and the first shogun, when he was still young. After the Takeda family was destroyed, the Tokugawa clan made the Takeda family’s samurais their vassals and enhanced their forces. That led to the Tokugawa regime. Therefore, they paid their respect to the ancestors of Masanobu Kosaka, senior vassal of the Takeda family. Jinnai Kosaka coordinated the ninjas and contributed to keeping Edo safe. They were ninjas, so it was easy for them to gather information. Jinnai Kosaka had a dream. That was to revive the Takeda family, which Masanobu Kosaka once served. He cooperated with the Tokugawa clan for that purpose. However, the Tokugawa regime started to view Jinnai Kosaka and his ninjas as dangerous. They suspected Jinnai Kosaka would use his ninjas to overthrow the Tokugawa clan. The officials of the Tokugawa regime wanted to somehow capture Jinnai Kosaka, but they feared Jinnai Kosaka and could not catch him. However, Jinnai Kosaka suffered a misfortune himself. He caught an illness called okori. Nowadays, Okori is called malaria. This disease that was caused by mosquitoes transferring parasites to humans was greatly feared at the time. Even Jinnai Kosaka could not move because of the fever. The officials had learned this and thought that this was their chance to capture him, intruded Jinnai Kosaka’s mansion and captured him and his ninjas. After the execution was determined, Jinnai Kosaka prepared himself. Upon being asked by an official if he had any last words, Jinnai Kosaka did not complain or rage, but asked for a wish. What was Jinnai Kosaka’s last wish?
