The official name of Jingu Stadium in Sinjuku ward, Tokyo, is Meiji Jingu Stadium. It is a historical stadium that, since being built in 1926 as a baseball stadium on the outer garden of Meiji Jingu, has been used for both amateur and professional baseball. Presently, besides the Tokyo Yakult Swallows using it as their home field, official games for leagues such as Tokyo Big6 Baseball League and Tohto University Baseball League,in which universities from Tokyo and the greater Kanto region participate, are held, and exciting games are waged every day. It is also used to determine the Tokyo representative for high school baseball. It is called the holy ground of baseball, so to speak. Many star players were born from Jingu Stadium. While holding league games in Jingu Stadium, Tohto University Baseball League is known for its quantity of top-class players in Japan. Many players that become professional baseball players gather to Division One universities such as Nihon University, Toyo University, and Chuo University. Players who left their names in Nippon Professional Baseball history are not uncommon too. One can say that it is star-studded with amateur baseball players. These universities wage heated games every time to win the league. However, the fall league of 1958 was different. There was a university that miraculously won against star-studded universities. That university was Gakushuin University. Gakushuin University was originally a university that has its roots in the school of the Old Imperial Palace. There is a strong image associated with it for being a university that the sons of the Emperor’s family, court nobles, and new nobilities attend, and didn’t really make an impression on the sports scene. So, were there star players on this year’s Gakushuin University by chance? Sadly, no, that was not the case. As a matter of fact, compared to the star players among amateur baseball teams, Gakushuin University baseball club was filled with unheard-of players. If anything, in the same year’s spring league, Gakushuin University finished last in the Tohto University Division One and managed stayed in Division One by winning the promotion/demotion series. As a team that could barely defend their position in Division One, no one though they would win the league games. Not to mention that it was the fall league of the same year that Gakushuin University narrowly maintained their Division One status. Before the league games began, even among fans of the Tohto University Baseball League, no one expected anything from Gakushuin University. In fact, even the students of Gakushuin University did not think about Gakushuin University winning at all. However, Gakushuin University team would go on to make a miracle happen in this fall league.
