There is a place called Koigakubo in Kokubunji city, Tokyo. From the letter koi, meaning love, in the name, one might think there is a romantic story associated with the place, but that is not the case. What’s associated is a story of tragic love.
Around 1180, there was a very beautiful woman named Asazuma Tayu who lived near Koigakubo. One samurai frequently visited Asazuma Tayu. His name was Shigetada Hatakeyama. He was the young family head of the Hatakeyama family, one of the more prestigious families in Kanto.
At the time, samurais were divided into 2 major forces. The 2 forces were Genji and Heike. Shigetada obeyed Yoritomo Minamoto, the leader of Genji, as a young and important warlord.
And he frequently went back and forth between the territory of Musashi province (now Fukaya city, Saitama) and Kamakura, where Yoritomo Minamoto was. In Kokubunji, there was an important road, Kamakura Kaido, which connected Musashi province and Kamakura.
Shigetada always visited Asazuma Tayu on his way to and from the territory and Kamakura.
In 1183, Genji and Heike finally faced off in a great battle. From Kamakura, a huge army headed to Kyoto. Shigetada, who was acclaimed as a great general with both wisdom and courage, also set out as Genji’s warlord.
Shigetada told Asazuma Tayu that he was going. Once at war, regardless of how great a commander he was, there was no guarantee he would survive. Despite that, he promised to her that he will win the war and come home alive.
This war between Genji and Heike lasted for 2 years until Heike was defeated and destroyed in Dannoura, Nagato province (now Yamaguchi prefecture) in 1185. Unlike now, there were no means of rapid communication back then, so Asazuma Tayu had no way of knowing where Shigetada was fighting or whether he was alive or dead. She just believed his empty promise of returning alive, and eagerly waited for his return, clinging to the hope that it could be today or tomorrow.
A man who wanted to marry Asazuma Tayu emerged. He made numerous advances to convince her to marry him, but she was determined to wait for Shigetada’s return, so she kept declining the man’s offer.
Therefore, this man came up with a plan to make her give up Shigetada, but......
What happened to Asazuma Tayu? Did Shigetada Hatakeyama keep his promise? What happened to their love?
